To core a head of lettuce, hold it so that bottom, or core end, faces a flat surface, bring the lettuce down hard against the surface to loosen core. Pull out core and discard.

You can easily substitute peaches or your favorite fruit for the apples in this recipe.
Yield: 1 6x10‑inch crisp

- 6 firm tart apples
- 1 cup sifted flour
- 1/2 to 1 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 3/4 teaspoon salt

- 1 egg
- 1/3 cup melted and cooled butter or margarine
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- cream or ice cream, if desired

- Preheat oven to 350°. Grease a 6x10‑inch baking dish.
- Pare, core and slice apples; place in baking dish.
- With a fork, mix the next 5 ingredients together until crumbly; sprinkle over apples.
- Pour melted butter or margarine over all, and sprinkle with cinnamon.
- Bake 30 to 40 minutes.
- Serve warm with ice cream or cream.
